Case Construction and New TPT Materials

New Richard Mille RM 41-01 Tourbillon Soccer Case Construction and New TPT Materials

First, we look at the physical body. The tonneau shape is exactly 43.23mm wide and 49.65mm long. It feels pretty thick on the wrist at 16.08mm. You can choose two unique case materials: Red Carmin Basalt TPT and Dark Blue Quartz TPT.

Richard Mille worked directly with North Thin Ply Technology. The company used real basalt stone fibers for the first time. The manufacturing team at RM takes basalt fibers that are exactly 40 microns thick and stacks them. Each layer has a 45-degree angle rotation before the next layer goes up.

Thus, this specific method creates a unique wood-like grain visual. Both models also feature grade 5 titanium flanges, which are microblasted, satin-finished, and coated with blacktop and hand-polished bevels.

Caliber RM41-01 Movement Architecture and Specs

The Richard Mille RM 41-01 Tourbillon Soccer Watch has a manual-winding movement of Caliber RM41-01. The company spent five years developing this movement together with Audemars Piguet Le Locle. The baseplate uses microblasted grade 5 titanium to keep it light but rigid.

In addition, it operates at 21,600 vph, holds 51 jewels, and gives a 70-hour power reserve. It uses a fast-rotating barrel to reduce internal mainspring adhesion and a barrel paw with progressive recoil for better winding gain. The watch features a 12.4mm tourbillon and a 9mm Glucydur balance wheel, which uses 2 arms and 4 setting screws. The moment of inertia is exactly 11.5 mg-cm2 with a 53-degree angle of lift, working with an Elinvar balance spring.

An important technical feature is the dual-column wheel system, which is a patented design. One column wheel controls the start and stop, and the second column wheel manages the flyback and reset. For safety against drops, it relies on a nick-free Chronifier barrel shaft and KIF Elastor KE 160 B28 shock protection.

Operating the Soccer Timing Complications

The main job of this Richard Mille RM 41-01 Tourbillon Soccer watch is tracking a football game. The flyback chronograph uses a central minute hand to measure the standard 45-minute halves.

If the match goes into overtime, the dial flange scale has a separate 15-minute section to cover the extra time. Besides, there is a dedicated match time indicator at the 9 o’clock position.

Every time you press reset on the chronograph, this indicator rotates mechanically. It shows “1st Half,” “2nd Half,” and overtime periods. Down at 4 o’clock is the standard RM function window. It shows W (Winding), N (Neutral), or H (Hands/Time-Setting) so you know what the crown will do before you turn it.

The Mechanical Goal Counter System

I think the most fun mechanical feature is the goal counter. You can see the match score on a horizontal scale across the dial. The home team score is on the top line, and the visitor team score is on the bottom line.

You control this using the pushers on the right side of the watch case. Remember, you press the pusher to add a goal. The mechanical counter simply jumps back to zero if you push past the maximum number limit.

Richard Mille placed the chronograph pushers on the left side in destro style because the right side is busy with the score. I believe this design smartly separates the time buttons from the score buttons, so you don’t press the wrong one in a hurry.

My Thoughts on the RM 41-01 Tourbillon Soccer Watch

In my opinion, putting a highly sensitive tourbillon inside a sports timing watch is not necessary for practical life. But, mechanically speaking, it is completely amazing because it shows the true core of Richard Mille. In fact, the brand over-engineers these watches just to prove their mechanical power.

Most buyers won’t run on a football pitch wearing this piece. They will likely sit in a luxury VIP stadium box. However, knowing the movement can survive heavy physical impacts up to 5,000 Gs gives the owner peace of mind.

Buying this watch will be very difficult because the production numbers are very low. The brand will only make 30 pieces for the Red Carmin Basalt model and only 30 pieces for the Dark Blue Quartz model. Richard Mille has not announced the price yet, but numerous authorized dealers in the watch market say it is around $1.9 million.
