Shaping Breitling
Breitling is a Swiss watch manufacturer that started by becoming a popular choice among pilots and it is now among the top watchmakers in the world. Founded in 1884, the brand has been known to produce robust watches with chronometric precision. The watch has always been an ideal choice by pilots due to its functionality and rugged build.
With the winged B logo, Breitling clearly shows its connection with the aviation industry. Léon Breitling, the founder of Breitling, was fascinated by racing and speed, which motivated him to work towards creating the best stopwatch in the industry. This is why the Swiss watch manufacturer has been producing high-quality chronographs.
In 1923, Breitling introduced the first watch with independent chronograph pushers and 10 years later they also presented a watch with a second pusher that was used to reset the stopwatch to zero. Before this, all chronographs were using the crown to access these functions making it a bit complicated to use. Basically, the two pushers and one crown design that is now seen as common among most chronographs these days, was an innovation by Breitling.
Chronomat and Navitimer era
While the Swiss watchmaker has launched various models over the years, the Breitling models that picked up the most attention were the Chronomat and Navitimer series. Due to their legendary designs and top-notch quality, the watches are now not only a top choice among pilots but have also been seen on the wrists of athletes and stars of the silver screen.
The successful partnership with Bentley
The Swiss watchmaker has also worked with the British car manufacturer Bentley for over 19 years. The partnership took off in 2002 when Bentley and Breitling together designed the onboard clock for the first-ever Bentley Continental GT. Since then, Breitling designed onboard watches for a lot of Bentley cars. Breitling has even launched some Bentley edition wristwatches with outstanding designs.
As of today, Breitling models come with COSC certification. The Contrôle officiel suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) is the official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute that is responsible for certifying the accuracy and precision of Swiss timepeices. This means that the Breitling watches with COSC certification have undergone a series of tests and their high-quality movements are qualified.
The Breitling collection
Breitling started off by offering specially designed chronometers to help pilots and give a contribution to the aviation industry. While the watches are still loved by pilots, they have diversified into offering a lot more than just regular chronometers.
Some of the popular collections under the Breitling brand include:
- Navitimer
- Chronomat
- SuperOcean
- Bentley editions
Navitimer
Navitimer is one of the most popular choices among people looking for a Breitling watch. The pilot’s watch first debuted in 1952 and at the time it featured a stunning black design. Over the years, the watch model has evolved and it is now available with different watch dials and styles. Navitimer allows pilots to make various calculations including speed, flight time, rates of climb and descent, distance, and fuel consumption. This makes it much more than a regular timepiece.
Currently, Breitling has roughly 35 watches with the Navitimer moniker that features 35mm, 38mm, 41mm, 43mm and 46mm dials.
Chronomat
Breitling launched the first-ever Chronomat model in 1941 making it one of the oldest models in the company’s catalog. In a manual winding edition, the Chronomat offered a chronograph function and a time display. The watch also came with an integrated slide rule that proved to be useful for performing calculations using the rotating bezel.
While the first Chronomat has a special place in the hearts of watch enthusiasts, the newer models are based on the original re-invention which was introduced in 1984. It was a collaborative effort between the Breitling design team and the Italian Jet Team Frecce Tricolori. The all-new chronograph was particularly designed according to the requirements of pilots. This means that the watch had a robust case that was able to withstand the pressure that came with the workload of the pilots and their aeronautic maneuvers.
Since then, the Chronomat has evolved a lot and has become an elegant-looking timepiece. It is now available in various color combinations, materials and sizes.
SuperOcean
While Breitling watches have been majorly inspired by aviation, with their Breitling SuperOcean series, they even took a dive into the professional diving industry. In the 1950s, the popularity of diving watches was growing and Breitling introduced the first SuperOcean watch model in 1957 aiming at professional and military divers. Since Omega and Rolex were already ahead in the game, Breitling had to do something different in order to beat the competition.
While the Omega Seamaster and Rolex Submariner of the time only supported a depth of 62.5 and 100 meters, respectively, the Breitling SuperOcean boasted water resistance of up to 200 meters. Besides that, the Breitling SuperOcean had larger numerals and hands to make it easier for the divers to see the time when they are inside the water.
Breitling introduced the SuperOcean Heritage collection in 2007 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the SuperOcean collection. For the first Heritage watch, the company even brought back its original 1950s logo and brought the braided steel bracelet from the first-ever Breitling SuperOcean. While giving it a nostalgic feel, the company still kept things pretty modern by making the watch available in 38 mm or 46 mm case sizes. The watch also came in a variety of different colors.
Bentley editions
Breitling and Bentley started working together in 2002. Initially, Breitling and the British car manufacturer together worked on watch designs for the onboard clocks that were fitted on the Bentley cars. Later, Breitling started manufacturing special Bentley edition watches in honor of the British car manufacturer.
One of the recent examples of Bentley edition watches was the 2019 Premier Bentley Centenary, which was launched to celebrate the car manufacturer’s 100th anniversary. The chronograph comes with a 42mm dial and is powered by the caliber B01. The watch is available in stainless steel or 18-karat rose gold.
In 2020, Breitling introduced the Chronomat B01 42 Bentley, which features a green dial and Rouleaux bracelet. The model was released to mark the longstanding partnership between the two companies. Besides the unique-looking green dial, the watch also came with “Bentley” engraving on the sapphire crystal case back.
