Crystal Sky Dial: Getting all the attention
It is the dial of this special limited edition Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar John Mayer that deserves all the attention. It is where artistry meets technical excellence. John Mayer, known for his refined taste in watches, worked closely with AP’s design team to create this masterpiece. He believes that it is the dial of the watch that has to be as special as possible. It has to be something mesmerizing to look at. Something you can stare at for hours.
Admired by the vastness of the sky, the dial is embossed with irregular shapes resembling crystals. This was relatively harder to achieve but AP did it by using a process called electroforming. Under this process, the stamping die is created atom by atom. Furthermore, the dial is PVD-coated to give it this dark blue shade. Overall, this is a complex process and will be hard for the brand to manufacture in larger quantities. Hence, they decided to keep this watch limited to just 200 pieces in the whole world.
Perpetual Calendar: Our Favorite Complication
Having a ton of AP watches in his collection, John Mayer was aware that for this project they couldn’t have gone wrong with a perpetual calendar. It is one of the most fascinating complications to look at and for a watch enthusiast, these complications are just something that can be admired forever.
For those who are relatively new to watches, a Perpetual Calendar watch advances the day, date and year seamlessly until the year 2100. Once set properly, these watches can take in account any leap years, which means not only every 1st of the month but even every 1st of March, these watches will be able to automatically adjust to the right date. Usually, these watches are paired with moonphase indicators, which are just jaw-dropping to look at.
So, it can be safely said that Audemars Piguet and John Mayer together made the best decision to go for a Perpetual Calendar alongside that dazzling Crystal Sky dial.
Calibre 5134: A Legendary Movement
All of the choices made during the craftsmanship of this limited edition Royal Oak John Mayer were made to make this watch as special as possible. According to Audemars Piguet, this is the last limited edition timepiece to be equipped with the Calibre 5134. The history of this calibre began back in 1978 with the release of the Calibre 2100/2800, which was rated as the world’s thinnest selfwinding perpetual calendar movement at the time.
Initially released in 2015, the Calibre 5134 brought the perpetual calendar movement to a larger case size. It achieved that while maintaining a thickness of just 4.3 mm. This particular movement has helped Audemars Piguet become what it has become today – one of the most innovative watch brands in the world.
Royal Oak John Mayer: A Result of All the Right Decisions in Watchmaking
When crafting a watch from scratch, every decision has to be made very carefully. AP’s design team and John Mayer worked very closely on this project to make something truly legendary. They started with making the dial extremely special as that is what will help this timepiece stand out from the rest of the AP watch collection. The decision to go with the Perpetual Calendar complication followed by picking up the Calibre 5134 was also rightfully made.
Lastly, the watch has been crafted out of White Gold, which was the perfect metal to go with this piece. It is a precious metal that perfectly complements the dark blue Crystal Sky dial.
