Nautilus 5980: End of an Era
The Nautilus collection took an unexpected turn this year. Patek Philippe decided to discontinue all Nautilus 5980 models. This includes everyone’s favorite 5980/1R. Alongside that, the Swiss watchmaker also decided to discontinue the two-tone version 5980/1AR, and even the Rose Gold variant with leather strap (5980R). These chronographs, with their distinctive porthole-inspired design, offered a sporty yet elegant design.
The 5980/1R, in rose gold, was a favorite among collectors. It was one of the most sought-after watches Patek Philippe had on offer. Its chronograph function allowed precise timing during regattas or impromptu races with fellow watch enthusiasts (yes, we do that).
Aquanaut Travel Time 5164a: A Steel Legend
The Aquanaut Travel Time in stainless steel, reference 5164a, has been around for nearly 13 years. Patek has finally decided to retire this legend that has definitely left a mark among the watch enthusiasts. For people who prefer sporty watches with rubber straps, this has been a top choice for those people.
Whether you are crossing time zones or sipping espresso at a Starbucks, the 5164a is your perfect companion. Thanks to pre-owned Patek Philippe watch dealers like WatchMaestro, you can still get hold of these discontinued pieces.
Ben Clymer, founder of Hodinkee, once called it “arguably the coolest Aquanaut to date.” And I concur. The steel variant had a very different charm
Nautilus Moon Phase
And then there’s the Nautilus Moon Phase. Here, Patek decided to take away the rose gold (ref. 5712R) and white gold (ref. 5712G) versions. I would personally say that these watches are taken away from Patek’s portfolio for good. These watches came with leather straps and just took away that premium look and feel that a proper bracelet brings to the table. For those who prefer a leather strap, it is not so good news. However, they can still get the discontinued timepiece through pre-owned luxury watch dealers.
My Farewell Speech for The Patek 5980
Being in the luxury watch industry for a while, I’ve had the privilege of handling countless timepieces. But the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5980 held a special place in my heart. Thanks to its weight, it did feel like something was there on my wrist. When I did switch to steel watches, I never enjoyed them as much as I enjoyed my rose gold 5980.
I have always liked the idea of having a Chronograph function always available on my wrist and 5980 having one was just the icing on the cake. To top it all off, the watch also had a date window which is a crucial thing for me when I am picking up a watch to wear. I just find a watch more practical with a date function.
Don’t Worry: You can still get these pieces
Even though Patek Philippe has removed these watches from their catalog, these are still in circulation in the secondary market. Hence, you can always get your hands on one. But it will come at a cost. Some of these models, especially the 5980 will be sold at a premium for a while as the discontinuation has made the watch even more desirable. While that does not sound like a piece of good news for the buyers, it will definitely bring a smile to the faces of the people who have one in their collection and are looking to cash out.
