Rolex Daytona: Overview & Key Specifications

The Rolex Daytona is also called the Cosmograph Daytona. It is one of the most popular models in the world. Rolex launched this watch in 1963 as a tool for professional racing drivers. The primary goal was to allow the drivers to measure elapsed time and calculate average speed while on the track.

Model Description & Naming

The name “Daytona” comes from the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Rolex wanted to strengthen its connection to motorsports. Although early models were just called “Cosmograph,” the name Daytona started appearing on the dial. And this became permanent eventually.

So, this means that Daytona was not an instant hit. These manual-winding watches sat on shelves in the 1960s and 1970s. • Movement: The current engine is the Calibre 4131, which is an update to the classic and most favorite 4130. It is an automatic and self-winding mechanical movement. Likewise, it has a vertical clutch and column wheel. So, when you press the start button, the hand starts instantly without jittering.

Main Variants

If you want to know and understand Daytona, you must analyze the three main eras. Expert collectors separate these eras by the movement inside the watch. 

• Manual Wind: These are the classic 4-digit references, such as Ref 6239 and 6263. Daytona watches produced between 1963 and 1988 would have a manual wind. So, this means you have to wind them by hand every day. Also, these are smaller, about 37mm, and very expensive today.

1. The Zenith Era: It is the era of luxury watches between 1988 and 2000, and this is where we experienced the first automatic Daytona with 5-digit references like 16520. Although Rolex used a movement from the Zenith El Primero, the company modified it heavily. These watches have a stunning look, and that’s why they are even becoming more collectible today.
2. In-House Era: Since 2000, Rolex has been building its own movement. The company has started the 6-digit references, such as 116520 and 116500LN. In 2023, the company updated this to the 126500 series with the 4131 movement and a metal ring around the ceramic bezel.

When it comes to bracelets, the Rolex Daytona has an Oyster bracelet and an Oysterflex. The oyster bracelet is the classic 3-link metal bracelet. You will usually find it on steel, gold, and platinum Daytona models. It has the Easylink extension, which lets out 5mm of slack on hot days.

Moreover, prices were very high between 2020 and 2021. Research shows that a steel Daytona would sell for $50,000. However, the prices came down to a range of $30,000 and $37,000 between 2023 and 2024.
